In my last column, I addressed some of the numerous ways Donald Trump was soft on Putin and Russia. Would you Trumpers like to hear some others? Others that Trump’s state run, propaganda and disinformation media likely haven’t told you? Or if they did, misrepresented, in order to make it seem Trump did no wrong? Of course you would. That will afford you the opportunity to chant your idiotic “fake news” mantra, or dismiss them by calling them “Never Trumpers,” when that classification is the most patriotic position any person who truly loves this country could take. But “fake news” and “never Trumpers” seem to be the drugs Trump’s brain dead and brainwashed base devour in excess in order to defend the most dishonest, incompetent, unfit and dangerous man to ever rise to high office in this land.
Have you forgotten the time then Fox anchor Bill O’Reilly asked Trump why he admired Putin when the latter was a killer? Trump responded, “There are a lot of killers. Do you think our country is so innocent?” Or how about the time Trump said Putin “did an amazing job of taking the mantle” when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump broke with US policy and suggested he was OK if Russia kept the Ukrainian territory.
And even though Russia was suspended from the G7 in 2014 after annexing Crimea, Trump repeatedly called for Russia to be invited back into the group. At the August 2019 G7 summit in France, Trump pressed the other leaders to include Russia at the 2020 gathering. They balked at the request, as it would’ve handed a huge victory to Putin without any concessions. Russia first!
And then there was the time Trump gave highly classified intelligence to Russia in the oval office. And when Trump congratulated Putin on his sham election victory – when his own aides told him not to. And just days before his inauguration, Trump told The Wall Street Journal that he was open to lifting sanctions on Russia. He said, “If you get along and if Russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions if somebody’s doing some really great things?” Russia interfered in our election, you orange treason weasel! And they didn’t help “us.” They helped you.
Anyone remember in 2017, when Trump proposed a “cyber unit” with Russia? Why? Trump said it was to… wait for it… combat election hacking. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up. Or how about the time in 2018, when during a cabinet meeting, Trump defended the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. He said the Soviet Union “was right” to invade in 1979. Remember: The Soviets had invaded to bolster a communist government and the US had backed Afghan militants who fought the Soviets. Again, Trump sided with Putin over his own country and those Americans who died in that war. America first? Not even hardly.
As well, Trump did nothing when he was repeatedly told during in-person briefings and in written intelligence reports in 2019 and 2020 that US intelligence believed Russia paid bounties to Afghan militants to kill Americans. Trump did not publicly condemn Russia or take any retaliatory actions. Instead, he denied receiving any briefings on the topic. Now, whether this story turned out to be true or not is not the point. The point is before the intelligence’s validity was called into question, Trump did nothing – and called the story a ‘hoax.’ And he never raised the topic with Putin in the course of several phone calls. Trump told Axios in a July 2020 interview, “That’s an issue that many people said was fake news. I have never discussed it with him.” Many people? Nope. Just Russian puppet Trump. And then echoed by his media and accepted as gospel by his base, of course.
And let’s go back to November 2019, Trump said he was thinking about visiting Russia, at Putin’s invitation, to attend a 2020 military parade in Moscow, you know, like the kind Trump wanted here in the US. All dictators like military displays like this. Trump only eventually declined the invitation, when the Covid-19 pandemic started wreaking havoc around the world.
And the critical point to keep in mind here is this. Donald Trump engaged in all of this degrading and demeaning behavior – to Vladimir Putin. Trump exhibited all this slobbering fealty and fawning deference to the guy who interfered in our democracy and our electoral process. But Trump didn’t care. It was designed to help him win. And given that Trump is an insufferable, malignant narcissist and a power hungry dictator wannabe, that’s all he cared about – himself.
I ended my last column with Trump’s latest Russia related treason, wherein he called Putin a smart and savvy genius for his deceptive ploy wherein he labeled parts of Ukraine independent. Since then, Trump said “Hold my diet Coke.” As news broke that Putin was bombing and invading Ukraine, Trump was hosting a grift (fund raiser) at Mara-Lardo. At one point he said “He’s taking over a country for $2 worth of sanctions. I’d say that’s pretty smart. He’s taking over a country – literally a vast, vast location, a great piece of land with a lot of people, and just walking right in.”
What kind of a man praises a murderous and ruthless dictator? What kind of man calls that dictator a smart and savvy genius when he invades a sovereign country and one of our allies? What kind of man praises an altercation that is going to lead to the deaths of many and the destabilization of the entire world to some extent? And all to placate one man’s greed and lust for archaic, territorial supremacy? Answer: Someone who admires such evil and aspires to be his equal – in short – Donald Trump.
And for those who chant “Trump 2024,” I agree completely.
